Medicine is not an occupation but a vocation. Over the centuries, physicians' role and status in society have been not merely based on sharing their professional expertise or on simply providing a "service" but on their voluntary willingness and deep desire to address and hopefully allay human suffering. Knowledge should not supersede wisdom and cleverness should not outshine common sense. Living well alone and remembering that medical practice is an art before it is a science are fundamental notions that physicians should aspire to. The cure of disease should not be more grievous than its endurance. Patients should not be treated as "cases" and doctors are not merely "providers". Humanism and compassion are the guiding principles for any physician.
